ACT Testing Information

Dear Parents:

Between April 23 and May 4, 2012 we will be administering the ACT QualityCore End of Course Assessments. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with a quick overview of these exams. It will also give you a few suggestions for helping your child to perform at his/her best.

The ACT QualityCore End of Course Assessments consist of 10 subject area exams that align with the classes students are taking in the middle and high schools. Your child will be taking these exams for the classes in which they are currently enrolled that correspond to the subject area exams offered by ACT. These exams are part of the Proficiency Based Graduation

Requirements and their purpose is to assess how much students are learning in a given subject area. The exams will be administered in two parts that will take approximately 55 minutes each for administrative tasks and taking the exam itself.

With every test, scores are only as meaningful as the effort students put into the test. The most important thing that you can do for your child during testing is make sure that she or he comes to school on the days of testing. Making up a missed test means time out of the classroom and away from instruction. In addition to attendance, your child will do his/her best on the test if:

  • They are encouraged to take the tests seriously and to give his/her very best effort.
  • Get to bed early the night before in order to be well-rested on the day of the test.
  • Have a good breakfast on the morning of the test. Breakfast is critical for your child’s performance.
  • Arrive at school on time so that she or he can relax and focus on the task ahead.

This testing is very important for your child, Classical High School, and the Providence Public School District. Let’s do everything in our power to help our children succeed and feel good about them for a job well done! Thank you for supporting your child and our school during the testing period. Please call if you have any questions.

Letter About GRA+DE Testing

April 2,2012

Dear Parents:

During the week of April 2, 2012 all Providence students in grades 6-12 will participate in the GRA+DE test. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with a quick overview of the test. It will also give you a few suggestions for helping your child to perform at his/her best.

GRA+DE is an important test that assesses a student’s progress in reading comprehension. This test helps teachers determine the appropriate reading instruction for your child and the current level of his/her functioning against which teachers can measure progress.

In every test, scores are only as meaningful as the effort students put into the tests. The most important thing that you can do for your child during testing is make sure that she or he comes to school on the day of testing.

Sincerely,

Principal

Evidence2Success Youth Survey

Dear Parent/Guardian:

I’m delighted to announce that Providence has been selected to participate in a project of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the University of Washington. On April 10* 2012, the 6th, 8th, 10th & 12th grade students in Providence Public School District will take an anonymous survey for Evidence2Success. The purpose of Evidence2Success is to learn what communities need for children and teens to grow up healthy, ready to learn, and prepared for success in life. The goal is to also help schools, public agencies and community leaders better plan important programs and services for young people.

This survey will provide a “big picture” view of how children are doing across all areas of influence in their lives. City and community leaders can use this information to identify where it makes sense for public agencies, schools, and communities to work together and share resources to address priority needs and build on existing strengths of children, families, and communities.

The survey asks questions about things your child and your child’s friends may or may not have done. Your child can skip any question he or she does not want to answer or can stop the survey at any time. There will never be any connection between the survey and the person who fills it out, and no one will ever be able to tell who provided what information. When we report on what we have learned, we will do it in ways that do not identify your child. Your child’s privacy will be respected.

Your child’s participation is completely voluntary. If you do not wish your child to participate, please call the school office, (401) 456-9145, and leave your name and your child’s name. If you allow your child to participate, there is nothing that you need to do. Your child can also decide not to take the survey on the day it is done. Students who do not participate in the survey will be given another activity by their teacher.

If you would like to view the survey, you may do so by calling (401) 456-9145 to schedule a time on or before April 6th, 2012.

Please read the enclosed Parent Information Statement to learn more about Evidence2Success. I hope you choose to allow your child to participate in this important survey.

Sincerely,

Dr. Susan Lusi

Superintendent
